Open Blue update - Sept 2017
September 27, 2017
Recently OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) posted on their website a finding of a Red sea bream iridoviral disease at Viento Frio, Panama.
In July/August this year, during routine testing one small group of fish from the Open Blue hatchery tested positive for Iridovirus. Subsequent testing on the same group of fish with three separate labs showed negative results for ISKNV/RSIV. Iridovirus is a reportable disease to OIE. We notified MIDA, the branch of the Panamanian government responsible for fish health on August 21, 2017 and they notified OIE who publishes and updates this information on a database.
• As a precaution, we destroyed and incinerated this group of Broodstock on August 22, 2017. This incineration destroyed the virus. MIDA supervised the destruction and incineration of this group of fish. The hatchery has been completely disinfected.
• We are confident that our rapid action has contained the potential for this disease. As a further precaution, we are now vaccinating for this disease. Vaccinations for other diseases have proved highly successful for our company.
Thanks to good farming practices our cobia are healthy. We work closely with our company veterinarians and other fish health professionals to track fish health. We test all our fish throughout their life cycle for a range of different factors.
OIE will provide updates on the disease status. For more information click here:
